Community Land Trust
of Western North Carolina
Community Land Trust of WNC (CLTofWNC) is a nonprofit organization that de-commodifies land, ensuring perpetual affordability.
We empower our community to secure permanent affordable, quality housing and protect vital natural resources, creating a more equitable and sustainable future for the region.
What is a Community Land Trust?
A community land trust (CLT) is a community-controlled vehicle for permanent affordability. The CLT owns the land, sells the houses, and maintains the sale (or resale) of those houses over time to maintain affordability, with a community-controlled board to empower long term economic stability of a region. This creates “community control” over the development of land where people live.
Why do we need CLTs?
When people have stable quality housing, you create a stable community and workforce. Housing is a basic human need and necessary to thrive. It allows people to build equity and creates a way out of the renting cycle that drains people’s wealth. A one-time investment makes housing affordable forever, even after that home is sold, creating peace of mind from stable, permanently affordable housing while leaving something lasting and meaningful for those who come next.
