Community Land Trust of Western North Carolina to Break Ground on Catawba Hills

The Community Land Trust of Western North Carolina (CLT of WNC) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for Catawba Hills, its newest affordable homeownership neighborhood, on Monday, November 30, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at 590 Souther Road in Old Fort. Community members, partners, funders, and local officials are invited. Catawba Hills will add 13 homes for permanently affordable workforce housing for families in McDowell County. Through the community land trust model, homeowners buy their homes while CLT of WNC keeps the land in trust. That keeps the homes affordable for each family that buys one after them and helps local residents put down roots in the community they love.

“Every family deserves a place to put down roots,” said A.T. Harrison, Executive Director of the Community Land Trust of Western North Carolina. “Catawba Hills gives working families in Old Fort a real path to homeownership, and because it’s built on the community land trust model, those homes stay affordable for generations. This is how we keep Old Fort a place where our neighbors can afford to stay.”

The ceremony will include remarks from CLT of WNC leadership and project partners, a ceremonial shovel turning, and a chance to learn about upcoming homeownership opportunities with a celebration at Appalachian Mountain Brewing afterwards.

Raise a Glass for Affordable Housing

CLT of WNC is taking part in Appalachian Mountain Brewing’s Brewin’ Good program. For every Von Watz Oktoberfest pint sold during the month of October, AMB will donate $1 to the Community Land Trust of Western North Carolina.
